Ethos and Pathos

Directions: watch the following video and point out the S.O.A.P.S. and the ethos and pathos. What makes the ethos and pathos effective? What makes the ethos and/or pathos ineffective? Would the clip be as effective if the speaker used only ethos or pathos?

Initial response due before class on Thursday.

Reply to classmate: Find a classmate that you disagree with his/her labeling of one of the elements (or who left out one of the elements) and ask a question that will lead him/her to the discovery of a deeper understanding of that element. For instance, did your classmate truly understand the purpose of the video or the way the speaker used ethos and pathos? Or did your classmate misinterpret how the two were used together in order to achieve the speech? If you cannot find a classmate you disagree with, find a post you agree with and detail why and how your classmate's response was effective.

Reply to classmate due before 5pm on Friday, October 17th.

      A=Teen Audience.
P= To send the message to build a life without acclimating to the negatives in the world.
      S= Chris Ashton Kutcher
Ethos is used by first presenting himself as an elder; “Grandpa” figure. He uses language that draws the audience in, describing a method learned while still Chris, before he was an actor at age 19. Tells audience that his real first name is Chris. He expresses that he feels like a fraud because his middle name is Ashton. He describes Hollywood Industry as being one with “dark secrets”. This all helps gain the trust of the audience.
Pathos is used during his description of what he learned as guides before the age 19. First of three is “opportunity”. Described his many jobs that most teens experience as hard work, relating to audiences’ probable work status. Also expressed he did not quit a job until new one found. Second, he talks about what “sexy” is. Kutcher says that “being sexy is being really smart, thoughtful and generous”. He says that everything else is no good. He tells the audience to believe him, and that outside of this is built with the notion to make teens feel bad. The third guide expressed is “Living life”, explaining that the world was not built by those better than them (audience). That it is taught that the world is the way it is, just live life. He stresses for the teens to understand it is important to not just live life, but to build a life. He finishes up by telling the audience to “stay sexy”, a clear language appealing to a teen audience.

    2. I didn't read any of these before I posted my own so I wouldn't accidentally steal anyone else's ideas or SOAPS but I probably should have. I think you are right in the way he used ethos and mine is comparatively wrong. I liked that you threw in the "elder" argument with yours and I'm disappointed I didn't notice that as well.

    3. I love that you are so detailed and I think I interpreted the video pretty much the same as you. All I can say is that you didn't mention if the clip would be as effective if only ethos or pathos was used and you didn't mention whether the pathos was effective at all.

  2. S- Opportunity disguised as work/ being smart is
    what makes a difference
    O- Teen choice awards
    A- teenagers/ preteens/ young adults
P- to let kids know that opportunity is hard work and to never give up, to not follow others for what they have done but to follow oneself path to greatness
    S- Ashton Kutcher

    Ethos
Ashton Kutcher: Actor, Dish washer, Carried shingles
    Deli worker, Factory worker

    Pathos
Joy, excitement, self- confidence, pride, gratitude

The ethos was effective because Ashton Kutcher listed his experience which he said gave him opportunity for the next venture he would partake in. The pathos was effective because the audience would not stop making noise. Either they were making noise just to be heard or they were showing appreciation towards Ashton Kutcher. The clip would not be effective if he would have just used one of ethos or pathos. He has his experience to back him up and he also appeals to the crowds’ emotions which made his speech effective.

    1. I agree that the pathos was probably noticed as effective because the crowd liked it but I disagree that that is why the pathos was effective. As in, was it effective because the crowd liked Ashton Kutcher, or did the crowd actually like what he has to say?

    Ethos-
He gives the audience credit for him being able to do what he does. Kind of flattery. He says that Hollywood has dark secrets. That makes the audience feel like they’re being included in something exclusive again creating trust. Because he calls himself a “fraud” for going by his middle name it creates a trust like okay he’s a good guy who wants to be honest with the audience. He tells the audience about when he was “Chris” when he was just like everyone else. Because he was “just Chris” before he was an actor, he can relate to us noncelebrities.
    Pathos-
His tone of voice and speech pattern makes him seem passionate about what he’s saying. His word choice is playing to the audience (sexy, crap, etc. ) He uses words that the teens in the audience would use or are excited by.

What makes the ethos and pathos effective?
He knows his audience he gets them to trust him and then wins them over by speaking on their level with excitement.
What makes the ethos and/or pathos ineffective?
He lists all his jobs he had as a teen and acts like that’s why he’s successful and famous. He doesn’t say that it also helps to be beautiful and in the right place at the right time. He got noticed because he was pretty and was offered a modeling gig. From there he went to acting because he got noticed as a model.
Would the clip be as effective if the speaker used only ethos or pathos?
    no

    1. I agree with what makes his ethos and pathos ineffective was how he presents his speech when he was listing the jobs he did before the age of 19. I really like how you explain what the ethos and pathos means. After i read your blog i noticed i did not give enough information about what makes the ethos and pathos effective.

    O- Teen Choice Awards
    A- Teenagers
P- To tell young people to be smart and try their hardest in everything they do.
    S- Mr. Chris Ashton Kutcher
Ethos- Having everyday jobs that a lot of other people might have had in their life.
Pathos- Self-esteem, courage, happiness, belief in oneself

The ethos were effective because he gave examples of how he started out as regular guy just like everyone else. The pathos was in effect because people in the crowd were going wild over him, they kept clapping at almost everything he was saying, showing that they agree with him. If he just used ethos or pathos in the clip, it would not have been as effective because without one and the other, the audience doesn't have any real reason to care about what he is saying.

    1. I agree with all that your saying, but i don't agree that his pathos was the only reason that the crowd was cheering for him. I think that the crowd was just cheering for him because who wouldn't want to cheer for a famous celebrity. What do you think could have made this speech better?

  5. S- knowledge leads to opportunity
    O- teen choice awards
    A- teens
P- to inform kids on ways to be successful
    S- Ashton Kutcher

The ethos was effective in that Ashton Kutcher is a well-known actor that really hasn't been in a lot of trouble and the audience trusts him because of that. The pathos was effective because he appealed to the every-man by explaining the jobs he had previous to being an actor, which were low paying jobs that don't require any experience and most people started out that way. He uses the ethos and pathos together effectively by explaining how he sought out opportunity and used his knowledge to gain those opportunities, so using just one of those would probably not be as effective.

    1. I agree with the majority of your post. But i would add to the pathos. He used a lot of words that caught the attention of the audience, along with is body language and the enthusiasm in his voice. He could have given the same exact speech, but if he just stood there and didn't move and spoke in a monotone voice, he most likely wouldn't have gotten as much of a response from his audience.

  7. S- Being smart enough to build the life you want, not to just live the life you have
    O- Teen Choice Awards
    A- Teens/ Young adults
P- To inspire young people to build their work ethic strong enough to be able to live the life you want
    S- Chris Ashton Kutcher
    Ethos:
He builds trust by giving the audience credit for him being able to be where he is today. He calls himself a liar because ever since he started acting he has gone by his middle name (Ashton), when in reality his first name is Chris. He then goes on to explain on what he used to do when he was Chris and what life was like. By telling the audience this he is building a sense of trust within them.
    Pathos:
He is encouraging the audience to better them self for the future. He wants to help reassure them that they can reach their dreams if they start soon. The harder they start to work now then the chances of them having the future they want is greater.

He uses his ethos well because he knows that he is a well trusted and well know actor so he uses that to draw his audience into his speech. He uses pathos well because his tone and the way he encourages the audience to do better for themselves. By using his examples of how he worked low paying jobs just like any other teenager, but even though he use to work those low paying jobs he bettered himself and is now a very successful actor. I do not think that Ashton’s speech would have been very effective on his audience if he only used ethos or pathos. Even though the crowd was probably not really listening to his speech the way he intended them to, he probably could have just used pathos/ethos and they still would have screamed like little girls.

    1. I agree with most of what you said. I think we both missed the fact that he greets his audience by reminding them that he is older than them. That might be a part of his credibility. Because he's older than his audience, he may have more experience than they do. I really like your last sentence. I think you're the only one that pointed that out.

  8. S- Find your opportunity by building a life and being smart.
    O- Teen Choice Awards.
    A-Teenagers.
P- To inform teenagers to be smart and the opportunity they have to move further in life to acquire their goals.
    S- Chris Ashton Kutcher.
Ethos: The job he had when he was young. He mentioned the type of job he had before he was 19 years of age. He said he worked in the grocery deli store, he washed dishes and sweep factory dust before he finally became an actor at the age of 19. All the job he had then was low pay jobs.
Pathos: Excitement to give the speech, courage and confidence
Ethos was how he presents himself as old guy; “Grandpa”. He told the teenagers his first name was Chris not Ashton. The Ethos was effective because he shared his past experience and the kind of job he had when he was 13 before he became an actor at the age of 19. Ashton is a famous actor and I think the teenagers trust him because he has being around for a while. He uses pathos to share what he learned when he was Chris. The three things he before the age of 19 was Opportunity, being sexy and building a life. He uses the kind of job when he had when he was 13 to explain what opportunity really means. He says “being sexy” is being smart, thoughtful and generous. He was emotional in his speech when he talks about “being sexy” is being smart, thoughtful and generous. His facial expression changes when he uses the word “crap”. The last one was Building a life that people can live in not just the life you have.

  9. S- Hard work and knowledge lead to opportunity and success
    O- Teen choice awards
A- Audience at Teen choice awards
P- To inspire teens to stay in school and keep their options open and build the life they want not just live in life the way it is.
    S- Chris Ashton Kutcher

Ethos was effective because he built trust between himself and the audience by "letting them in" or at least making them feel like he is when he talks about the dark secrets of Hollywood. He shows hes honest by coming out with the truth about what his real first name is. Then he tells a story about when he was "just Chris" and a teenager himself, making himself relateable to the audience.

Pathos was effective because he appealed to the teens by talking about the first couple jobs he had and how they weren't the best jobs possible but they were a start and another opportunity every time. He showed pride by saying the jobs he had were no better than himself. He also kept a passionate tone throughout and gave a positive, honest vibe.

If he had only used ethos or pathos it would be ineffective because one without the other doesn't make his speech strong and would make the audience care less or be uninterested.

    O- Teen Choice Awards
A- The people at the Teen Choice Awards
P- To reach out to the youth and let them know that you have to work hard and being sexy is being smart.
    S- Chris Aston Kutcher

    Ethos-
He gives background on how he came to be where he is now and that it was because of the fans that he was accepting the award. He is enlightening the younger people that there is hard work that needs to be done but keep you head up keep pushing towards your goal and it will come. Don’t be someone you are not.
    Pathos-
He uses strong words to grab the audience’s attention such as, sexy and crappy. He speaks very avid about his life and how the youth should keep striving to reach their goals.
What makes ethos and pathos effective is that it is making a connection with the audience. Letting them know that you are a real person not just an actor on screen and that you have been in their shoes too. What makes the ethos and/or pathos ineffective is that with him listing all of his jobs that he had he didn’t really say more than before he quit one he had the new one lined up already. I do not think that the video would be as effective if he used only ethos or pathos.

    O- Teen Choice Awards
    A- teenagers and young adults
P- motivate young people to make their own world
    S- actor Ashton Kutcher
Ethos- Ashton uses ethos by flattering his audience by saying he wouldn't have a career without them, he also makes his audience feel as if the people who have built the world are no better then they are.
Pathos- the tone and word choice, such as calling himself a grandpa, appeals to his young audience, also the jobs he mentions that he works are most likely jobs the audience has or had. By making his audience feel as if he is no better his speech is more effective.
A speech without ethos and pathos would be flat and ineffective, the speaker would not be able to hold the audience's attention.

O- The Teen Choice Awards, The Ultimate Choice Award

A- The audience at the Teen Choice Awards and those who watch it through the television.

P- To persuade his audience that to be successful, even in Hollywood, you have to work hard to find opportunities, be smart to be sexy and build a life instead of just having one.

    S- Ashton Kutcher

Ethos- Ashton uses a lot of his own life experiences to back up his point about working hard. He is a well known, successful actor in Hollywood which builds his credibility.

Pathos- He uses a lot of strong words that appeal to the audience, such as sexy, and he talks about what made him who he is, which is obviously a well liked subject, considering how the audience would not stop screaming, even when he was trying to talk. His voice and body language also a play a role in this pathos.

The ethos and pathos are effective because Ashton is most likely considered an "expert" at being successful in Hollywood, which helps his ethos through credibility. Pathos is effective because he is talking about a subject that his audience is obviously interested in and he draws them into his topic.

I do not believe there is anything that makes his ethos or pathos ineffective. He is obviously getting the response he wanted from the audience. It may have helped to make his ethos a little better if he had included some statistics about those who work hard, but I think his own experience works well in that case.

The clip would be ineffective if he only used ethos or pathos because he would either be lacking the credibility he needs to make his point viable, or the aspect of his speech that made people interested and excited.

    S: Chris Aston Kutcher
The ethos was effective because Ashton Kutcher talks more about what makes him who he is today. He brings his past by inspiring the audience to not give up. Also the pathos was effective because it brings happiness, excitement, and self-confidence into people. The Pathos or ethos can be ineffective because if Ashton Kutcher was going to only use one it was not going to be successful because each of these two need a support from the other in order to t improve the argument
