Directions: Read your diagnostic. Beyond the notable difference in your writing ability, look at the goal you set for yourself. For this blog, write about 100-200 words to start off what will (during the next class session) become your Final. Discuss the goal you set for yourself at the beginning of class, and then detail (briefly) how/why you did or did not achieve that goal. This could become your thesis statement/introduction. IF you did not achieve your initial class goal, did you adopt a new goal as the class progressed? Did you accomplish the new goal? Why or why not?
Due before 10pm on December 9th. (We will begin--and hopefully finish--writing this blog in class.)

My goal before the class started was to get better with my writing skills in every area. I believe I have accomplished that goal. In my diagnostic blog, I wrote that I wanted to be not good, but great at this. I haven't gotten there yet, but I am closer to that goal now than I was when this class started. My feelings of trepidation have passed and I am much more confident now that I can excel in a college setting. The thing that has been the most beneficial this semester to me is the refinement of my organization skills when writing and researching papers.
ReplyDeleteThe goal I set for myself during the first day of class was to be able to write a full essay without procrastinating. Though I’m still pretty bad, I feel myself improving. I’ve procrastinated on every assignment since the third grade. Usually I would do the assignment and get an A but this class is strict which is a good thing. This class has allowed me to actually work on the assignments that are due. However, the book for the class was very hard for me to pay attention to. I have about a good fifteen minutes of attention span then I become occupied with something else. I want to get better at focusing when reading because I want to be a more productive student.
ReplyDeleteOver the course of this class I had accomplished a couple of the goals that I set at the beginning of the semester. Thesis statements were a real struggle for me. I didn’t fully understand what all should be in a thesis statement until we did workshops in class. With the workshops I felt better because I realized that I’m not the only one who struggled with this and that helped me relax a little. Feedback was also a hard thing for me to accept when I started this class. I did not like people telling me what was wrong with my writing because it made me more frustrated. Even though I struggled throughout this class I felt like I did a good job on working on my goals throughout the semester.
ReplyDeleteWhen I look back at my diagnostic, I see that I have traveled a long way. The goal that I set at the beginning of the semester was that I learn how to write a better paper. The way that I planned to accomplish this goal was to apply myself into the class more. I also wanted to learn how to think more deeply about something that I am reading or writing about. I think that just by applying myself and actually wanting to learn something from this class has not only helped me improve my writing skills, but also to reflect on what I’m reading, and receive a better understanding of it as well.
ReplyDeleteWhen I finished high school, I thought I knew everything. I was a valedictorian, had achieved all A’s and never had much trouble in any of my classes. I thought college would be a breeze or at least the general education classes would be. But as I progressed in my classes I realized that a lot of what I learned in high school was wrong. For example, I was always taught to write in the five paragraph form. I was also misinformed about ethos pathos and logos. Even though we went over this a lot in my high school language classes, I never quite understood them. I was also never taught to analyze a text, my teachers had just expected me to know how without being given any instruction. My initial goal was to improve my analyzing skills, but I added more goals as I found that my previous knowledge was wrong. This classes helped me to understand these concepts and gave me the resources to learn more. I think I have achieved my initial goal and the others that I set for myself throughout the class. The class discussions were extremely helpful to me and the little brown handbook was an extremely useful source that helped me become a better writer.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading my diagnostic, I realize that I did accomplish many of the goals I had set for this semester without realizing it. My goals were to use the class objectives to better my writing, I feel that, through the exercises assigned, I did just that. I wanted to learn to identify my audience better, and we went over that in class. I needed to learn to stick to just the requirements without fluffing my paper and I feel that that was achieved in the Synthesis Assignment before the paper. I also needed to learn to take a critique and actually apply it to my paper. This was the hardest part for me, but as the class went on It got easier.
ReplyDeleteAs I look back to the beginning of the semester I can confidently say I have reached my goal of improving my writing skills. Our weekly blogs helped me develop these skills by being able to see how my fellow classmates were communicating and organizing their writing. Their input was also useful regarding my errors and questioning certain elements of my responses to the assigned blog. Our blogs helped me think more critically and forced me to take my time when responding to prompts. In the past I would have written anything just to have a response and get credit. In the beginning of the year I said that English was not my favorite subject, now I will admit it's not my least favorite. It's not at the top of my list but I enjoyed English and I achieved my goal of improving my writing.
ReplyDeleteReflecting on the past 3 months, my goal was to be able to persuade my audience and improve my writing skills. I was nervous when this class starts 3 months ago, but with determination and motivation i was able to reach my goal. This class helped me to accomplish the learning objective I set for myself in terms of reading, analyzing, annotating questions and reflects on college text which increase my knowledge on writing college paper.I found it difficult to build confidence in myself in terms of writing college paper when i got to United States because I write and speak british english in Nigeria and the method of writing was totally different. The homework given in the inquiry and the little brown handbook was a great tool for this class, It helped me to be more proficient in writing. My previous knowledge when i was in high school was nothing compared to college writing. I never heard about ethos, logos and pathos when i was in Nigeria. It was my first time learning what this word meant. With the help of my instructor I understood how to appeal to my readers’ emotion, reason and character. Research paper was the hardest paper i wrote in this class, it was difficult for me to determine my topic and find a reliable source. I am sure the skills i learned in this class will be useful in future.
ReplyDeleteIn the beginning of the semester I set a goal for myself to become a proficient writer. Looking back at my essays that I have written during the course of the semester, I feel as though I have learned how to improve my writing but also that I could have done better. I thought that if I followed the course objectives that it would help me develop my writing skills. I believe that I did take the objectives such as; learn actively, communicate with clarity and originality, and use them in all of my papers that needed to be accomplished for English class this semester. Learn actively was a little easier to understand and use then the other two objectives because if I did not learn what Ms. Taylor was teaching I know my papers would have turned out worse then what they were. Now communicate with clarity was a little bit harder to grasp because with some papers I felt a little lost on who my audience should have been, so I was not as strong with that in my papers I felt. The hardest one out of the three objectives that I wanted to excel in was originality. In some of my papers I felt as though I did reach the standards but in a few others I felt that I could have done better then I wanted and should have.
ReplyDeleteIt have been spoken from a long time ago that people should teach others how to fish not fish for them. Over the course for this 121 English class I can see that I had achieved the goal that I had set up for myself and since I had accomplished it, I have a desire that I will continue to enhance my writing in my further education. Looking where I was and what my plan was for this class, I can say that I has got what I wanted for the class. My goal that I set up at the beginning of the class was to learn how to write a better paper, think deeply about what I read and what I am going to talk about. Also, pass my thought to other through paper. Even though I still struggle I can say this has become an ambition for my next class level and my future education.
