Directions: you have just finished your second college paper, and your first (and, likely, last) rhetorical analysis. Please answer the following questions in the form of a paragraph (no more than 200 words). What do you feel you gained from understanding how others use rhetoric in their arguments? What aspect of the unit did you find most useful? How will you use the knowledge from this unit to both create and interpret arguments in the future? Is there anything more you would like to know about rhetoric before we move on?
Due before 5pm on November 6th.
5 points for posting on time
5 points for following directions and answering all the questions.
The thing I gained most from this Unit is strategy #3 from the rubric. I had never thought of my papers as another half of a conversation and I found it very helpful to take Malcolm X's argument and present another side this way. I think this strategy and mindset can definitely be helpful in my future papers. I also found the peer-review to be helpful because it not only gave me somebody else's perspective of my own paper, but I was able to glean a little bit of perspective on my own paper from reading theirs as well. It is always nice to see what others are doing to be able to contrast and compare. The thing I'm still finding the most difficult is how/when to cite when I paraphrase or if I am even paraphrasing but I feel like I am gaining a better understanding of the paraphrasing itself.
ReplyDeleteFrom having to write this paper, I learned that rhetoric can make or break your argument. If any of it is weak your audience may think you don’t know what you are talking about or that you aren’t credible. I think I benefitted most from learning about logical fallacies. Recognizing logical fallacies can make it really easy to believe or dis believe an argument. Understanding how other people use rhetoric in arguments can help me to use it in my own arguments to be more persuasive.
ReplyDeleteThe knowledge I gained from writing this paper turned out to be this, you have to know what components work best into an argument. If you have evidence that doesn’t quite support your thesis or main argument, the audience might get lost and confused. At that point they won’t want to keep reading or they might not agree with your evidence. The aspect I appreciated the most was the peer review. It let me be able to hear things that were wrong with my paper when someone else wrote it, as opposed to when I wrote it. I could also look at how someone else did there paper, so that I might get new ideas based off of what the other person wrote. I will be able to use the knowledge I received from this unit to produce better papers in the future by finding strong and constructive evidence to support and prove my thesis to the audience. I would like a better understanding of the works sited part of writing so that I don’t plagiarize.
ReplyDeleteIn high school we learned about rhetorical analysis, but we were not taught it very well. I never really understood ethos, pathos and logos and I had no idea what logical fallacies were. Now I understand how writers use rhetoric to appeal to their audiences in different ways. Depending on what they are trying to argue or how they want their audience to respond, authors can implement different appeals. I found the explanation of ethos and logical fallacies very useful. Even though I was taught ethos, I never understood it, but now I do. And I had never heard of logical fallacies, but now that I understand them, I know how to find them in what I read, and I know not to use them in my writing. I guess that is how I would the knowledge from this unit in my arguments in the future. I would also be more aware of the appeals I am trying to make. I think I now have a very good understanding of the unit, and I have no other questions.
ReplyDeleteI believe I've gained a better understanding of how to gain my audiences attention when writing. Knowing what logical fallacies are was very useful. I've been reading articles and watching commercials finding so many fallacies. I will make sure to use ethos, pathos and logos in future papers. I will also be sure to not include logical fallacies.
ReplyDeleteWhat I understand about rhetoric analysis is that after reading a text, the writer is supposed to examine how the author conveyed the argument that was presented and if it was successful or ineffective. The part of the unit I found most useful is the peer review because I could compare my essay to my fellow classmates and also get feedback to better my paper. The way I will use this unit in the future is to examine the argument and actually understand what the author is trying to say, then analysis the text to see if it was an effective argument. If the text does not support the argument, then I would, in a very academic way, support my claims of why it was ineffective.
ReplyDeleteI learned that in order to have a good rhetorical analysis you have to understand all aspects of what you’re reading. Knowing the intended audience and what the author’s purpose is helps you understand how to prove your argument to your audience. I found that finding the SOAPS of the essay helped me understand what was going on in the essay. I found that the peer review was most helpful to me because I feel like I got pretty good feedback. There is nothing else that I would really like to know about this unit but am excited to be able to do my own topic in this next unit.
ReplyDeleteI gained how to cite my essay properly, and how to gain my audience attention in my paper. This my first paper ever on rhetorical analysis, also I did not know anything about ethos, logos and pathos. But this class gives me full understanding of what they really mean and how to use them. I will surely make use of them properly in my future papers. I never heard of logical fallacies before we discussed it in class, after discussing what they meant in class I have a better understanding on how to identify them in my reading and how to avoid them when writing my papers. The peer review is what I found helpful. It was a great tool, which helps me realize the errors in my paper after someone else read it aloud to me. I think I still have problem with my sentence structure.
ReplyDeleteI feel that I gained the knowledge on how to write a correct rhetorical analysis and how not to write a rhetorical analysis. The aspect that I found most useful in this unit was about logical fallacies. Having learned about the logical fallacies helped me realize that a lot of people and or commercials use them more than they should. In the future I will use this new found knowledge by knowing how to make a strong argument and how to reconginze if my argument is not so strong. I do not believe that there is anything more that I would like to know about rhetoric before we move on.
ReplyDeleteThe knowledge that I received from writing rhetoric paper is that when writing papers like this from someone point of view, people need to think critically about the argument of the author, so they cannot have theses statement that does not support what they want to talk about. Being not able to focus on that can left the writer behind by losing credibility and attention. The aspect that I found that was most useful in this unit, represented to me as the peer view. This aspect made me understand what others got to say about my paper such as where I lost control and got to fix and it also gives me a chance to understand others taught. From having to write this paper I understand how I can produce my future papers without having difficult time. Such as find strong evidence. I would like to be better on word choices and sentences structure
