Reading Like an Academic

Directions: Summarize your experience with the three-read process of the Anne Lamott text (not what you learned, but how the process helped you read this text, and might help you read other texts in the future). If the process did not help your comprehension of the Lamott text, please state so, but summarize why you did not benefit from this method of reading and what you might do instead to help with text comprehension. The post should not state emotion or opinion about either the text or the three-read process, but should, instead, concentrate on explaining the experience objectively. Your reply should be no longer than 200 words. (Due before class on September 4th.)

Reply: Comment on a classmate's ability to relate his/her experience in the fashion of a summary. If you believe s/he wrote more of a narrative/analysis than a summary, make one suggestion for what s/he might do for his/her summary for the Davidson text. Your response needs to be at least three sentences long, and must contain constructive criticism. (Due before 5pm on September 5th)

Stay professional with your posts. Also, remember that this is a community forum. Take what your classmates say with a grain of salt, but also take advantage of the crowdsourcing.

There will be links I will provide in-post in order to clarify the meaning of words and ideas. Sometimes Blogger will sneak in its own links. These will be underlined twice and are ads. I would encourage you to look up unknown words and ideas on your own. If not for your own mental stimulation, collecting words will help you build your extra credit project.

  1. Using the three-read process with the Anne Lamott text helped me to better understand the text and analyze what the author was trying to say. By first taking a look at the title and the first and last paragraphs, I was able to tell that the text was going to be humorous. After reading those two paragraphs, I found that the text was going to be a bit different than I had originally imagined, just from reading the title. After reading the first and last sentences of each paragraph, I was able to get a very good understanding of what the text was going to be about. I believe that from that point on, I could have written a fairly good summary of the text, without even reading the entire assignment. After my full read, I could see all of the pieces of the earlier examinations coming together. I was able to understand the author’s main point and understand that she was encouraging writers not to panic, everyone writes bad first drafts, but no one else will ever see them. I also noted words I didn’t understand and questions I had so I look them up after the read. By the end of the three-read process, I was able to determine if I agreed or argued with the author and will be able to remember this text well.

    1. I thought you did a very good job, you explained how you applied it to what you were reading, but I think that you could have said more about what the three read process was.

  2. The three-read process helps you to understand what to expect from the text before actually reading it. After reading just the title, you can infer that the piece will be blunt but funny and about writing. Then, reading the first and last paragraph, you could tell it would be justifying first drafts that the author may not be proud of. Reading the first and last sentence of each paragraph gives more insight into the text and out of context entices you to want to read the full piece. This step is helpful if you want the motivation to read the full excerpt, but if you only need to summarize the text, the previous steps would have been sufficient in this case. When you finally get to read the entire excerpt, the questions left by reading the first and last sentence of each paragraph are answered. The extent to which the steps of the three-read process need to be followed will be determined by the requirements and length of the assignment. The three-read process can be very helpful in saving time and can be a valuable tool for students.

    1. You do a very good job of explaining the three-read process in your post, however, you only briefly mentioned the text itself. I think that your post would have been better if you had actually talked about how it helped you understand the text as you read it. You write, “you could tell,” and, “you only need,” and, “helps you,” so it is clear that you are explaining to the audience how the process could help them, but how did it help you specifically?

    2. I really enjoy how to write all your blogs, and I think you do a great job keeping everything short and to the point. In this I think you explained the 3-read process really well and professionally. My only note is that you didn't explain how YOUR experience with the process was, which would have make your response much stronger than it is.

  3. Learning how to use the three read process was very helpful and I will use it for all my future readings. I really like how with the first step I read the title, first paragraph, and the last paragraph and that gives me a grasp of what the text will be about. Then with the second step I read the first word and the last word of every paragraph. That also really helped me to comprehend the text given to me, with a little more detail about what I am going to read. The last step is to completely read through the text. In doing this you already have an idea of what you are going to be reading but now you are able to completely understand everything the author is trying to say. This process was a great new technique that I have discovered that can be implemented in every student’s practical application to theirs as well as my own education.

    1. I like the overall flow and context of your post. It seems to me that you met all the criteria and were objective. The only suggestion I would make is in the last sentence it doesn't feel like you needed the "to theirs" as it was already stated when you said "every student's".

  4. This past week in English class, I read an article by Anne Lamott using the 3-read process. This was my first experience using this technique. The first step involved visually assessing the text. I also read the introduction and the first and last paragraphs. The second step included reading the first and last paragraph of each paragraph. This step was more productive than the first. I was able to grasp a better understanding of what the author was writing about. If I had stopped at step 2 I feel I would have been able to give a decent summary of the article, but I moved onto step 3. This involved reading the article in its entirety.  By this step I had full comprehension and had developed an emotional response to the article. The 3-read process was very useful in helping me grasp a deeper understanding of the author's main point. I had become a more involved reader. I will be sure to use this technique for future reading assignments.

    1. I think you did really well Angie!!! Really like the flow of your blog. The only suggestion I have is to try to read what you are writing, I just saw a couple of grammar mistakes. But bravo you did a wonderful job on explaining the three read process.

  5. The 3-read process is a new tool recently introduced to me and has already been proven useful. This process was used while reading the Anne Lamott essay. By reading the title of the essay first it allowed me to make an inference that the rest of the text was going to be very honest with humor mixed in. From there the next step is to read the first and last paragraph as well as the first and last sentences of the remaining paragraphs. This helped to get a basic idea of what the essay was going to cover and provided the information to make a simple summary. The third step in the process is reading the entire essay as one piece. After reading the entire Anne Lamott essay I was able to better analyze what the text said and have a complete understanding. The third step is important because its the final piece where all ideas and thoughts come together as one and can help to clarify any miss understandings or thoughts brought on by only following the first 2 steps. The strictness to follow these steps all depend on the extent of the task you are working on. For detailed in depth summary's following all steps strictly would be best, but for a simple summary or response to a text, lightly following the steps with suffice. This process was very helpful and can be a great tool to use on assignments for the best results.

    1. First off let me say I enjoyed your summary of the 3-read process. You made me realize I may have left out some important details. I have just one suggestion, remember to condense your summaries to the main points.

  6. Last Thursday was the first time I have been introduced to the three-read process and I found it very helpful in many ways. Using the Anne Lamott essay, “Shitty First Drafts”, we used the three-read process to acclimate ourselves to the material, establish its foundation, and then analyze the text and determine its meaning.
Using the first step of the process, I read the title, introduction, and the first sentence of each paragraph and found this to be a good measure of the overall fluidity of what the author’s main objective was in her article. This step can be a very useful tool in determining the comprehension of how an essay should flow.
During my second read-through of the essay, I read the entire text and tried to decipher if my idea of the thesis during my first read was correct, who the audience might be, and any other questions I might have of the text in general. I found that the author used her friends’ accounts of their own first drafts to solidify her major argument and that her audience was broad, as anyone that has ever written has probably experienced a (excuse the pun) “rough” first-draft.
On the third read-through of the essay, I again read the entire text and answered any questions I may have had as well as internalized anything the article said that I may use with my own writing process. In this case, with a short essay that was well put-together, there probably weren’t as many questions to be answered as others can sometimes have.
In conclusion, the three-read process can be very helpful with not only how one reads a work, but also in how one writes. This process can also help one read and comprehend larger works quicker and more efficiently and can save time that can be better spent writing that next “first-draft”.

    1. I really like how you set up your summary. Not only did you briefly describe how the three read process works, but you added how it effectively helped you comprehend the essay. The flow of your blog just works very nicely together.

  7. The three-read process of Anne Lamont text has helped me to understand how to read and analyze my essay without wasting time. The first step was reading the title of the essay. This gives me the idea of what the essay was about. The second step was reading the first and the last paragraph, also the first and last sentences on each paragraph. Reading the first and the last sentences of each paragraphs gives me some information of what to expect, and more details when it comes to summarizing what I read on the essay. This helped me to comprehend what Anne Lamott wrote to the writers about not showing their first draft to anyone. It might be discouraging if anyone sees it. Anne lamott also discuss that no matter how long experienced and young writers have been writing they always have a rough draft. The last step is reading the entire essay, this last process is more important to me because it gives be a better understanding of what to know about this essay. I found masses of word and details that will be helpful in making a good summary. The three-read process has helped me to understand the quickest way to read a paper especially if I need to read and analyze academic paper in future.

    1. First, let me say that I like your summary and enjoy the points you made. You explain the process very well. The only suggestion I have would be to stick to the main points of the process where you went in to detail about the actual essay. It doesn't take away at all from your point, but I'm not sure it meets criteria. Great job!

  8. The three read process has been proven very useful to me. Last Thursday when we learned how the three read process works it was a little confusing, but then in my next class I decided that I was going to try and use it again for a different text. When I read the new text with the three read process it proved itself very helpful and useful for me. I went back and decided to reread the Lamott essay and this time It was easier to understand. I enjoyed this essay because it was very humorous. By following the three read process for this essay It was more useful so that I didn’t have to waste a bunch of time reading and rereading the essay just for me to understand what the text was about. After I followed all the steps, I then was able to sit back and realize that it was a lot less stressful than reading the whole text a hundred times. I was able to summarize the essay without a problem and it also made me think more about what I was reading after I had already read it. The three read process has been extremely helpful to me and it is a great tool for me to be able to use in my future classes.

  9. The three read process has been very helpful in reading and understanding the Anne Lamott text because it helped me look over to get the gist of what was written mostly to pick out what the text looks like. I also had seen how reading the text again was helping me take notice of the details and everything that the text was really trying to say. I was also able to more effectively judge the text because I had a better understanding of what the text was saying based on what I comprehended from the other two readings that I had previously. I think that overall it has been helpful not just in this text, but also in everything else that I might read throughout my life.
